I notice that I do this sometimes, especially now that I Interact with mostly English as a second language speakers. I tend to change my speech to make it easier for them to understand me.

Some Musings About Taipei

There’s obviously some differences between Taiwan and USA. Here are some random observations from my last 2 months here:

-  First off, there’s free Wi-Fi in Taipei!

- People use the Minguo Calendar here, which is a year numbering system where the first year was 1912 when Taiwan was founded. 2014 is year 103 with this calendar.

- They have siesta in Taiwan, which actually really surprised me because I think of it as a more European or South American concept. Lots of shops close and people take midday naps, usually from around 2:30 - 4:30 pm.

- The plugs are the same as in America. Which is super convenient.

- It’s a luxury and rarity for someone to have an oven in their apartment.

- You oftentimes can’t flush toilet paper in most residential homes.

- Everyone is really nice, but people stare at me all the time.

- I work with children, and farting is not a big deal. Like at all. Someone will fart and no one will say anything. In the states the class would be in uproar for at least 5 minutes.

- I’ve seen maybe 4 people with child strollers, but it’s really common to see people push their little dogs around in doggy strollers.

- Speaking of dogs, lots of dogs here know how to ride on scooters. Doesn’t even phase them.

I made my first trip to a Taiwanese bakery today! When you go in you grab a basket and a set of tongs which you use to put everything you want into your basket. Then they bag it up for you when you pay. I got a soy milk bun (yes I only got one thing).
